About US

The Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association Inc. (NIHA) is a community organisation formed in May 2000 to promote and protect the industrial heritage of Newcastle and the Hunter Region.

The Association focuses on the industries, manufacturing, sites, and infrastructure that have played a central role in Australia’s development, with particular attention to the Hunter’s industrial history. NIHA supports research into this history and works to ensure that important places, objects, and records are identified, documented, and conserved.

A key aim of the Association is the preservation and adaptive reuse of industrial heritage sites and buildings. NIHA advocates for the practical conservation of these places, recognising their cultural, historical, and social value, and the importance of keeping them in use rather than lost or forgotten.

NIHA also encourages the development and operation of repositories for materials and documents relating to industrial heritage, supporting education, tourism, and public access to the region’s industrial past.

The Association meets weekly at Delprat’s Cottage, the former home of G.D. Delprat during the construction of the Newcastle Steelworks in 1914. Visitors and new members are welcome.
